My work is based on three books (Managing the Millennials, [email protected], and Millennials Who Manage) which address managing young professionals, helping young professionals overcome roadblocks to career success, and how young professionals can prepare themselves for leadership positions.

Managing the Millennials
There is a monumental changing of the guard that is taking place in organizations. One of the largest birth cohorts or generations in history (Baby Boomer) is beginning to retire while their predecessor (Builder) is almost completely out of the workforce. Gen X is hitting stride and on the cusp of inheriting the proverbial organizational mantle. The three aforementioned age cohorts have learned to play in the organizational sandbox together. However, the Millennial age cohort (the largest in today’s workforce) is kicking up sand. They are plug-n-play when it comes to wanting to engage at work but organizations often turn them off as a result of not understanding their behaviors and values.

You will learn skills that will help you work with every generation but exponentially important when working with Millennials. The session is not based on a discussion about Millennials—it is the result of a decade long conversation with Millennials and the people who are successful at working with them as employees and clients.

The presentation is based on international research of young professionals in a  career four years or less. I asked what the biggest challenge of transitioning into career was and wrote a book listing the challenges and the skill-set required to overcome them.

The session helps demystify the roadblocks young professionals experience due to how they are perceived in the workplace. Here are few of the challenges; lack of experience, not being taken seriously, lack of patience, communication with older workers, and rigid processes.

Millennials Who Manage
This presentation focuses on how to manage in a multi-generational workforce as a young professional. Young professional managers still have to deal with being perceived as lacking experience. Perhaps the biggest challenge is the redefinition of relationship to peers and the person who gave the promotion.

Millennials are becoming the next generation of leaders. Today, however, as they move into management, they face difficult practical challenges. Reflecting on his extensive enterprise consulting and research experience, Dr. Chip Espinoza shows how to help transition them more smoothly into management. Learn about the management skills that come naturally to Millennials, and explore what really motivates Boomers and GenXers whose formative experiences are much different than Millennials. We will also identify the core management and leadership competencies that Millennials need right now.

The challenges Millennials face while transitioning into managerial leader roles are not unique to their generation. For instance, it can be an isolating and overwhelming experience for anyone. However, there are dynamics at play in today’s world that may amplify the challenges for Millennials making the managerial leap – social media being one.

I begin my presentation with a list of the top challenges young managers reported to face while transitioning into management. It is important to note that many of them experienced alienation and loneliness in the beginning.
